An ebook
is an electronic book. It is published
only in digital form. It has text, and images. It can also be an
electronic print of the printed book. Many
eBooks exist without a printed version. These books are created to be read on electronic
media. Any sophisticated computer device can be used to read this e-book on Mobiles,
laptops, smart phones and tablets and print books.
Many print and eBooks
sales moved to the internet and readers started buying the books on the net. IN
USA the eBooks published in 2012 was more than the number of hardcover. EBooks
make it easy to use it for reference and to mark pages. Fiction, non-fiction,
biographies, technical material is best suited for eBooks because the words can
be searched with the help of keywords.
There are many
formats to the ebook – PDF, word. Each software company promotes a different
type of ebook. PDF has a layout and dimension. E-readers use different formats
and they accept books only in that format. They fragment the ebook market,
standard packaging and selling of eBooks is not agreed on.
A consortium in
1990s created an Open ebook format which would provide a single source document
which any device could handle which every type of platform software or
hardware. Open EBooks requires XHTML and
CSS subsets
Contains a list of components that help identify
table of contents, cover art, etc. This led to the EPUB; Google Books have
converted public domain works to this open format.
EBooks gained
popularity in 2010 have their own market, many publishers started distributing their
books as eBooks and many authors put their books up as eBooks which were never accepted
by the publishers.
